Don’t be in a hurry and desperate for the money and fame. Words from Nigeria Born, Gospel musician, writer, speaker and make up artiste, Faith Yebo. On her exclusive chat interview with Sammy Sas.
Sammy Sas: pls can we meet you?
Faith Yebo: My name is Faith Yebo
Sammy Sas: pls tell us about your early stage in life growing up?
Faith Yebo: I grew up surrounded by music cos my dad used to be in the Baptist choir, so from childhood I loved music.
Sammy Sas: So what type of music do you do?
Faith Yebo: I am a gospel music minister/I also do inspirational songs
Sammy Sas: why gospel music?
Faith Yebo: Let me say it’s a calling from God not just about having the ability to sing christian songs
Sammy Sas: kindly tell us a little about some of your achievements and major moments,since the inception of your professional career?
Faith Yebo: I have an album with several singles out. I am dropping an EP soon to precede an album later in the year. I was Selah Afrik’s reader’s choice most fashionable female gospel celebrity for 2015. I have featured on many programmes and events nationwide.
Sammy Sas: So tell us with your experience in the Nigeria gospel music industry, what do you think is the major challenge faced in the industry?
Faith Yebo: We don’t have enough promoters and record labels so the artistes are saddled with the responsibility of funding and distributing their work themselves
Sammy Sas: Which ethnic group/state are you from?
Faith Yebo: I am Bassa-nge from Kogi state.
Sammy Sas: which local meal can you prepare very well?
Faith Yebo: I’m not blowing my trumpet, but I will say I’m a good cook so can cook a lot of local meals well. My choice for now will be beans soup which is my traditional local soup very well. We call it (Ini-alapka)
Sammy Sas : your favourite is?
Faith Yebo: Rice, plantain and chicken.
Sammy Sas: Skibo!
Sammy Sas: So who inspire you?
Faith Yebo: Hmmmm, I follow a lot of musicians once they are good and inspire me. They don’t necessarily have to be big names. Like recently I just discovered one lady called LaRue Howard. Any good worshipper or soft rock artiste will catch my attention.
Sammy Sas: So if you where asked to do a collaboration with three secular artists, who would you pick?
Faith Yebo: Wow, this is serious ooo. Lol. 1. Adele 2. Zahara (South African based) in other not to be biased my Nigerian choice will be the legendary Onyeka Owenu
Sammy Sas: So apart from music what else are you into?
Faith Yebo: I have a day job, I’m a makeup artiste, I am also into photography, I’m a speaker/writter, I am the founder of the “Still Beautiful Initiative” an NGO reaching out to people who have been through traumatic experiences. We reach out to them giving them reasons to feel beautiful again. I love to inspire people given any opportunity.
Sammy Sas: Do you see the Nigerian Gospel music,going as far as the Grammy?
Faith Yebo: Sure…With God all things are possible.We just need to add hard work, dedication and excellence to our work. We will get there someday soon.
Sammy Sas: Where do you see your career in the next five years?
Faith Yebo: A worldwide ministry with impact.
Sammy Sas: What’s your favourite colour?
Faith Yebo: I have no favorite colour. I love to be combine colours so I can work with any colour, depends on the occasion or how I feel per time.
Sammy Sas: Do you believe in speaking in tongues?
Faith Yebo:100%
Sammy Sas: Apart from Jesus, who is your favourite character in the Bible?
Faith Yebo: Esther
Sammy Sas: Your favourite Bible verse is?
Faith Yebo: When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Ps 126:1
Sammy Sas: Amen!
Sammy Sas: If you were to be an animal,who would you be?
Faith Yebo: If I was an animal I will be an Eagle. Lol
Sammy Sas: What’s your favourite quote?
Faith Yebo: You can’t make your candle shine brighter by putting off another man’s candle.
Sammy Sas: Your advice to aspiring and upcoming gospel musicians?
Faith Yebo: Don’t be in a hurry and desperate for the money and fame. Take one day at a time, be excellent in your delivery and packaging. Stay spiritual cos what we do is spiritual so shouldn’t be treated with levity. Stay humble and finally do other things to raise money to fund your music before the music begin to fund you.
